Neck Pain
Stiffness, soreness, or limited range of motion in the cervical spine, often from posture or strain.
Neck pain is discomfort, stiffness, or restricted motion in the cervical spine — the seven vertebrae that support the head. It is the fourth leading cause of disability globally, with a 12-month prevalence of around 30–50% of adults (Hoy et al., Annals of Rheumatic Diseases). Most cases are mechanical, originating from the cervical facet joints, intervertebral discs, and surrounding musculature rather than from serious pathology. The average adult head weighs 10–12 lbs, and every inch of forward head posture effectively doubles the load on the cervical spine.
Common presentations include a stiff, aching neck that is worse after sleep or prolonged screen time, sharp pain when turning the head, and a tight band of tension running from the base of the skull into the upper shoulders and between the shoulder blades. Many patients also report tension-type headaches, jaw tightness, and occasional tingling into the shoulder or arm when nerve roots are irritated.
Office workers, students, healthcare professionals, and anyone with significant daily screen exposure are at highest risk. Side and stomach sleepers, people with previous whiplash or sports concussions, and individuals under chronic stress (which elevates trapezius and levator scapulae tone) are also frequently affected. Women are diagnosed roughly 1.5× more often than men.
A combined, root-cause approach.
Systematic reviews (Cochrane, 2015; JOSPT clinical guidelines, 2017) support spinal manipulation, mobilization, and exercise as effective interventions for mechanical neck pain. We restore motion in restricted cervical and upper thoracic segments, release the suboccipitals, upper traps, and levator scapulae with ART and dry needling, and rebuild the deep neck flexors and scapular stabilizers that hold your head in a neutral position throughout the day.
- Cervical adjustments
- ART for traps, scalenes, and SCM
- Dry needling for trigger points
- Postural and deep neck flexor rehab
